PTO Meeting 9/11/23

Attendance: 52

We had a great turnout for our first meeting! We welcomed a bunch of new faces and got a lot done. We are excited about the great things we are going to do this year and are excited to work with you as we revitalize the BIA PTO!

Chan’nel Williams welcomed everyone and asked people to sign in on the attendance list and reminded people to join if they have not already.

We are starting a bunch of new things this year, one of which is Shout Outs! Anyone that has a great experience with a student, teacher, staff member, parent or other member of the school community should go to https://biapto.org/shout-outs/ and let us know so we can recognize them properly.

As of the beginning of the meeting, we had 23 official members of the PTO. We spent $552 on the welcome back teacher breakfast and on other back to school activities including the supply drop off and back to school nights. As of the meeting, the PTO had $1026 in it’s bank account. We are committed to transparency about the finances of the PTO and can provide more details to anyone who asks.

Chan’nel reminded everyone about the Passport to Learning events that BCPSS is holding. There is still room at the event for Thursday the 14th. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance at this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/baltimore-city-schools-passport-to-learning-tour-2557909

Chan’nel reviewed the process that must be done for a parent to be able to volunteer in the school building directly with kids. Each person must be fingerprinted at the BCPSS Headquarters at North Avenue. You can schedule an appointment to be fingerprinted here https://biapto.org/fingerprint and Chan’nel is going to look into how we might host a fingerprinting event for parents to make it easier to get it done.

We then talked about several upcoming volunteer opportunities. There is an ongoing need for people to help in the uniform closet during the school days. Please visit the Get Involved tab in the menu above to sign up for a shift.

We are also on the lookout for family members who want to be class parents. We hope to have at least one person per homeroom by the end of September. A welcome kit is being prepared with helpful information to make it easier for these awesome people to help. If you are interested, please sign up here: https://biapto.org/get-involved/class-parents/

Then we broke out into committee rooms to talk about our 4 main committees and help divvy up the work. Our committees are:

  • Events – helping with language nights and other events
  • Hospitality / Community Building – making the school and PTO a welcoming experience
  • Fundraising – organizing fundraisers, donations and other things to support the school
  • Communications – maintaining the website and calendar, as well as helping keep parents informed.

We had short breakout sessions for each committee to introduce ourselves and do some preliminary planning, but more info will be available soon. If you would like to join a committee, please visit: https://biapto.org/get-involved/volunteer/ and sign up for the committee of your choice.

After the main meeting was over, a few of us stayed behind and talked about the Fall festival we want to host this year. It is tentatively scheduled for Oct 28th. We determined that it would be a trunk or treat with vendors and a bouncy house and other activities. We are going to open it up to the entire neighborhood, not just our school, to use it as a community building event to grow our group. More info on this will be provided as it is figured out.

Thank you! See you on October 10!
